Social Subjects Department

Lochgelly High School Social Subjects Faculty aims to provide stimulating and relevant learning experiences for young people by developing a sense of identity within the world both past and present. We look at every aspect of our society and inspire young people to become confident individuals, successful learners, responsible citizens and effective contributors. Social Subjects reinforce excellent literacy and numeracy skills within the framework of an exciting and accessible curriculum. We support and challenge the young people in our faculty and have high expectations for them.

Welcome to Social Subjects

Our pupils have the opportunity to progress in History, Geography, Modern Studies and RMPS from their CfE level in S1 through to Advanced Higher. Our curriculum structure involves a Broad General Education phase from S1 to S3 followed by discrete 1 year SQA courses from S4 to S6 in our Senior Phase. The department offers a variety of courses, both academic and vocational, catering for pupils of all abilities and interests.

 

S3 Subject Choices

History 

In our subject, there is no such thing as a wrong answer! The skills you will learn will help you to use historical evidence to prove your point. This will also support you in other subjects, in analysis, in finding evidence and in essay writing. Throughout S3 we look at Civil Rights in the USA and focus on Scotland’s involvement during WW1!

Modern Studies 

Modern Studies asks and answers three big questions: What is going on in the world? Why is it happening? What can we do about it?  This is a course which will help you to understand the most important issues in the world today. It helps you gather information about these issues and to evaluate the information you have. Most importantly, it helps you make your own mind up and come to your own conclusions about these issues.

S3 Humanities  

Dive into the fascinating world of Humanities, where every lesson is an adventure! This subject is all about understanding the people, places, and events that shape our world. Through fun, interactive activities like debates, projects, and creative tasks, you will explore History, Geography, culture, and more. 

If you love asking big questions, solving real-world problems, and discovering how humans have shaped the planet, Humanities is perfect for you! It’s your chance to build skills in critical thinking, teamwork, and communication—all while learning in an exciting and engaging way. 

 

S5/6 Subject Choices

 

History (S5,6) 

If you are intrigued by our past and want to learn how it will shape our future, you should consider studying History. History will increase your cultural awareness, and moral understanding, of the world we live in. By studying History, you will gain a range of transferable skills: from informed citizenship and critical thinking, to research and general awareness. What is more, the knowledge acquired through the study of History is relevant to a wide range of disciplines, and can lead to diverse employment opportunities. In S5 and 6.

In S4 the main topics covered are: Democracy in Scotland, Crime and the Law and Underdevelopment in Africa as a key world issue. 

In S5 and S6 the main topics covered are: Democracy in Scotland and the United Kingdom, Crime and the Law and the USA as a world power.
